buffalo92

My name is James Donald, born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This website buffalo92 is dedicated to the memory of my paternal father and mentor, Eddie F. Donald, who served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a member the Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division. My first foray in photography began some fifty years ago with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera as a student at L. J. Rowan high School of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. From the first moment I laid hands on that Brownie Hawkeye, I was hooked on taking pictures. I purchased my first 35mm camera in 1961, which was an Argus C3 during my tour of duty in Landau, Germany with the U.S. Army. Following my tour of duty with the military, I enrolled at Alcorn State University of Lorman, Mississippi in 1963 as a freshman student majoring in music education. To assist in the funding of my music education degree, I worked as a student photographer in the public relations division. I will be forever indebted to such individuals as Mr. John Hendricks, Mr. Warren Johnson and Mr. Cecil Walton of the public relations department at Alcorn State, who gave of themselves unselfishly to teach me the finer points of still photography. Upon graduating from Alcorn State University in 1968 I continued to pursue my love and passion for still photography while working as a music teacher and band director in Natchez, Mississippi from 1968-1970. In 1970 my family and I moved to Port Gibson, Mississippi, which has a population of fewer than 10,000 citizens. Port Gibson is a rural town located on the Mississippi River, which was recognized by General Grant as "the City too beautiful to burn". During my stay in Port Gibson from 1970-1984 I photographed numerous images on black and white film, which consisted of old barns, tenement dwellings of former sharecroppers, older church structures, histroical sites, zoo animals, flowers, parades, balloon races, state fairs and theme park images. The vast majority of my photographic experience has been in central and Southwest Mississippi which encompasses the cities and towns of Natchez, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, Clinton, rural Hinds county and Jackson where I presently reside. It is my hope and sincere desire that you and other viewers as yourself will find some joy and pleasure in viewing these images.
    Godspeed,
    James A. Donald
